PhD in Theory and Numerical Simulation of Condensed Matter

The PhD curriculum in Theory and Simulation of Condensed Matter, is addressed to highly motivated students interested in undertaking a research activity in the multifaced and constantly evolving field of condensed matter theory.

Students are selected through an international selection based on academic qualifications and an oral interview (see for further details the section Admission).

The normal duration of the Ph.D programme is three years and a fourth year may be allowed when needed.

During the first year of their PhD, students learn the most advanced tools for modeling and studying states of matter, from ab-initio simulation of real materials and molecules, to quantum simulation of lattice models, from the classical statistical theory of many-body systems to its quantum counterpart, and acquaint themselves with the broad research activity carried on at SISSA through more focused and topical courses (further informations in the section Teaching).
This preliminary stage provides students with a common background and all the information necessary to decide in full autonomy the research topic they intend to pursue for the completion of their PhD.

The subsequent two or three years in the PhD curriculum are devoted to individual research activity under the guidance of supervisors. Discussion of annual project reports ensure timely detection and solution of possible difficulties. At the end of the course of study and research students are admitted to the final examination to obtain the Ph.D. degree, equivalent to the Italian "Dottore di ricerca".

The School assigns grants (currently € 1.135,00 net/month approximately) to students admitted in the PhD program. The grant is awarded for three years, extendable for a fourth year subject to approval by the School authorities. A contribution towards living expenses of the amount of € 1.200,00 gross per year will also be awarded to those who will submit a regular rental contract.
